What Structural Grades Are Used for Oak?

In structural design, oak is often specified by strength classes such as D30.

For oak framing, the right grade depends on the size of the section, the span, the load it needs to carry and the structural engineer’s calculations.

Green Oak vs Air-Dried Oak: Which Is Best for Oak Frames?

Oak framing is often made using green oak, which is freshly sawn timber with a higher moisture content. This may sound surprising, but green oak is ideal for traditional framing because it is easier to cut, shape and joint.

As green oak dries, it naturally shrinks and tightens around traditional joints, such as mortise and tenon connections with oak pegs. This is one of the reasons traditional oak frames can become stronger and more settled over time.

Air-dried oak has already lost more moisture before use, making it more stable and often preferred for visible joinery, glazing details or where reduced movement is important.

Why Does Oak Last So Long?

Oak contains natural tannins, which help make it more resistant to insect attack and fungal decay than many less durable timbers. When kept well detailed and properly ventilated, oak structures can last for generations.

The key is not to stop oak ageing, but to detail it correctly. A good roof overhang, raised sole plates, suitable damp proof courses and careful drainage all help keep moisture away from the frame.

Oak does not always need to be coated. Externally, it can be left to weather naturally to a silver-grey colour. Where a more consistent colour is desired, UV oil or suitable exterior timber treatments can be used, but these will require ongoing maintenance.

How Does Traditional Oak Joinery Work?

Oak framing is closely associated with traditional mortise and tenon joints. These joints are usually secured with oak pegs, often using a technique called drawboring, where the peg pulls the joint tightly together.

This method reduces reliance on visible metal fixings and allows the frame to accommodate natural movement as the oak dries. Modern oak framing combines this traditional knowledge with accurate design software, CNC machining and structural engineering calculations.

The result is a frame that feels traditional, but is produced with modern precision.
