When it comes to choosing materials for a sustainable, characterful home, oak is a top contender. But if you’ve ever noticed black stains on freshly cut oak or experienced staining on walls or floors near your oak frame, you’ve already encountered one of oak’s most distinctive natural features: tannins.

In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at what tannins are, how they affect oak, and how to work with them, rather than against them, in your building project.

What are Tannins?

Tannins are naturally occurring compounds found in many plants and trees, particularly in oak trees, tea leaves, and some fruits. In oak, they serve as a defence mechanism, protecting the tree against fungi, insects, and bacteria. These compounds are especially concentrated in heartwood—the dense, inner part of the trunk that gives oak its strength and durability.

Oak’s high tannin content contributes to its legendary resistance to decay, making it a favourite for everything from wine barrels to green oak framing. But those same tannins can cause a few quirks worth understanding when you’re building with oak.

How Do Tannins Affect Buildings?

  1. Reaction with Water

When oak is exposed to rain or high humidity, tannins can leach out of the timber. This often leads to dark brown streaks or run-off stains, particularly on nearby stone, render, or brickwork.

This leaching is completely natural and typically stops once the oak has had time to season and dry. However, if left unmanaged, tannin stains can be difficult to remove and may impact the appearance of lighter finishes or cladding.

  1. Reaction with Iron

Oak tannins are famously reactive with iron. When tannins meet even trace amounts of iron (like nails, screws, or tools) they create a chemical reaction that produces deep blue-black stains.

This is why experienced oak framers always use stainless steel or non-ferrous fixings and tools when working with green oak.

 

Tips for Managing Tannins in Your Project

Use Stainless Steel or Galvanised Fixings Avoid any ferrous metals (like mild steel) in contact with oak. Use stainless steel screws, nails, and brackets wherever possible.

Protect Adjacent Surfaces When oak is freshly cut or newly installed, protect nearby materials—such as pale stonework or white render—from tannin run-off using temporary coverings or drip detailing in the design.

Consider Pre-Treatment Some builders apply tannin-blocking primers or sealers to oak components before exposure to moisture. Be cautious though: not all finishes allow oak to breathe, which is vital when working with green oak.

Expect and Embrace Character Tannin marks and run-off are part of oak’s natural behaviour, especially in the early months. Many self-builders and architects embrace these marks as part of the unique, evolving story of the building.

 

Can Tannin Stains Be Removed?

Yes, in many cases tannin marks can be reduced or removed, particularly if they are dealt with early. The right method depends on the surface affected and how long the staining has been present.

For light tannin run-off on masonry, brick, render, or stone, start with the gentlest cleaning method first. A solution of sugar soap and warm water can be used as an initial surface clean to remove dirt, residue, and loose staining before moving on to stronger treatments. Always test on a discreet area first, especially on pale stone, lime render, or porous brickwork.

For small areas of masonry staining, bicarbonate of soda can also be used as an alternative mild cleaning agent. Mix it with a little water to form a paste, apply it to the stained area, gently scrub with a soft or medium brush, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Bicarbonate of soda is best suited to spot cleaning rather than large areas, and it should always be tested first to ensure it does not affect the surface finish.

For more stubborn tannin stains, oxalic acid can be used carefully to help bleach and lift dark marks from masonry or timber. Oxalic acid is effective, but it must be handled with care. Safety data sheets advise wearing suitable personal protective equipment, ensuring adequate ventilation, avoiding dust formation, and preventing contact with eyes, skin, or clothing.

How to Use Oxalic Acid to Remove Tannin Stains

  1. 1. Test a small area first
    Before treating the full stain, test the oxalic acid solution on a discreet patch of masonry, stone, brick, or timber. Allow it to dry fully so you can check the result before continuing.
  2. 2. Wear suitable protection
    Wear chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, long sleeves, and protective clothing. Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing in dust or vapour. Keep children and pets away from the treatment area.
  3. 3. Prepare the surface
    Brush away loose dirt and debris. If the stain is on masonry, first clean the surface with sugar soap and warm water, then rinse and allow it to dry.
  4. 4. Mix the solution carefully
    Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the oxalic acid product. Always add the product to water as directed, never improvise stronger mixes, and avoid splashing.
  5. 5. Apply to the stained area
    Using a brush or sponge, apply the solution only to the affected area. Avoid spreading it onto nearby surfaces unnecessarily.
  6. 6. Allow it to work
    Leave the solution for the recommended time on the product instructions. Do not allow it to dry out completely on the surface unless the manufacturer states this is suitable.
  7. 7. Gently scrub if required
    For stubborn marks, lightly agitate the area with a suitable brush. Avoid aggressive scrubbing on soft stone, lime mortar, or delicate surfaces.
  8. 8. Rinse thoroughly
    Rinse the treated area several times with clean water to remove any remaining acid residue.
  9. 9. Repeat only if necessary
    If staining remains, allow the area to dry and reassess before repeating. Several gentle treatments are safer than one overly strong application.
  10. 10. Dispose of materials responsibly
    Do not pour strong chemical residues into drains unless the product instructions confirm it is safe to do so. Follow the manufacturer’s disposal guidance.

 

Some people also use professional stone, brick, or timber cleaners, particularly where staining is heavy or the surface is delicate. If in doubt, speak to a specialist cleaner or the supplier of the masonry product before using acids.

Preventing Stains Before They Happen

Prevention is usually easier than cure. At Vestra Oak, precautions are taken throughout storage, handling, production, and haulage to reduce the risk of tannin staining and iron contamination.

During air-drying and seasoning, care is taken to reduce the likelihood of stick marks by using appropriate stacking, spacing, and bearers so air can circulate around the oak as evenly as possible. Correct airflow helps the timber season more consistently and reduces areas where moisture can become trapped against the surface.

Vestra Oak also takes care to prevent oak coming into contact with ferrous metals during storage, handling, production, and haulage. This is important because oak tannins react with iron and can create deep blue-black staining. Wherever possible, non-ferrous or stainless-steel contact points, fixings, and handling methods are used. However, once oak leaves our control, contact with ferrous metals can still occur on site, during third-party transport, or through tools, fixings, straps, or storage conditions managed by others.

For best results, keep green oak away from mild steel, iron filings, unprotected steel tools, ordinary nails, and metal swarf. Use stainless steel or non-ferrous fixings, protect adjacent pale masonry from rain run-off, and avoid leaving oak stacked directly against surfaces that could mark or retain moisture.

 

Tannins are a vital part of what makes oak such a resilient, characterful material. While they can surprise the unprepared, understanding how they behave allows you to build with confidence—and appreciate the natural beauty and integrity of your oak frame.
