Strength and load-bearing capacity

Oak is a dense hardwood capable of carrying substantial loads. This allows oak roof trusses to support wide roof structures while creating open internal spaces with fewer intermediate supports.

The required timber sections and truss design must always be determined by a structural engineer, taking into account the roof covering, span, wind and snow loads, building use and connection details.

Long-term durability

Properly designed oak frames can remain structurally sound for generations. Oak’s natural tannins also provide resistance to many insects and decay organisms, although good detailing remains essential.

Keeping the timber away from persistent moisture, allowing ventilation and protecting vulnerable end grain all help maximise the lifespan of the frame.

Predictable performance in fire

Large oak sections do not burn through immediately. The surface chars at a relatively predictable rate, helping to insulate the timber beneath and retain structural capacity for a period of time.

Fire performance must still be assessed as part of the wider building design and verified against the applicable Building Regulations.

A distinctive appearance

Few structural materials offer the same visual character as exposed oak. Its grain, warm colouring and traditional mortise-and-tenon joints can make the roof structure a central feature of the room.

As green oak naturally dries, it may develop shakes, surface splits and subtle movement. These are characteristic of oak framing and do not necessarily affect structural performance.

Suitable for traditional and contemporary buildings

Oak roof trusses are commonly associated with barns, listed buildings and rural homes, but they also work well in modern architecture. Clean rooflines, large glazed elevations and open-plan spaces can be complemented by the natural texture of an exposed oak frame.

A lower-impact structural material

Timber stores carbon absorbed while the tree was growing. When oak is sourced responsibly and used in a long-lasting structure, it can provide a lower-impact alternative to more energy-intensive materials.

Common Types of Oak Roof Trusses

Different truss designs suit different spans, ceiling heights and architectural styles.

King post truss

A king post truss has a central vertical post connecting the tie beam to the apex. It is one of the most recognisable designs and is often used for moderate spans in homes, garages and extensions.

Queen post truss

Queen post trusses use two vertical posts rather than one. This arrangement can help accommodate wider spans while creating a more open central area.

Raised tie truss

In a raised tie truss, the tie beam is positioned above wall-plate level. This provides additional ceiling height and is popular where a vaulted or more spacious interior is required.

Raising the tie changes the structural forces within the truss, so the height and connection details must be carefully engineered.

Scissor truss

Scissor trusses use crossing members to form a pitched or vaulted ceiling below the roof. They create a dramatic internal profile but require careful structural design because of the forces transferred to the supporting walls.

Mono truss

A mono truss has a single roof slope. It is commonly used for lean-to extensions, canopies and buildings that connect to an existing structure.

How Far Can an Oak Roof Truss Span?

There is no single standard span for an oak truss. Its capacity depends on:

  • timber grade and section sizes
  • roof pitch and covering
  • wind and snow loads
  • spacing between trusses
  • support conditions
  • joint and connection design

Every structural oak truss should therefore be designed or verified for the individual project rather than selected from a generic span table.
