We designed a bespoke green oak frame pergola, carefully tailored to both the aesthetic and functional needs of the property. We used sustainably sourced green oak for its structural integrity and traditional character, ensuring it would weather gracefully over time to a silver patina that harmonises with the vertical timber cladding of the house. The traditionally jointed oak beams, showcasing craftsmanship and complementing the architectural lines of the home, and the use of mortise and tenon joints with oak pegs provided authenticity and ease of install.
The pergola was positioned to create a semi-enclosed dining space on the new poured concrete terrace. The open post-and-beam design provides subtle enclosure without compromising natural light or sightlines. Central to the pergola is a large dining set with a parasol for seasonal shade. The surrounding design includes potted plants, integrated lighting, and access to a raised planting bed, enhancing usability and atmosphere. All footings were raised on concealed stainless steel pins with oak coverings to limit ground moisture, preserving the timber integrity over time.
The completed oak pergola has become a striking focal point within the garden, seamlessly extending the home’s living space into the outdoors. Visually, the natural oak structure offers a perfect balance of rustic charm and clean architectural lines, echoing the contemporary timber cladding and metal finishes of the house. Functionally, it provides a versatile area for outdoor dining and entertaining, creating a sheltered and inviting space that can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.
The client expressed great satisfaction with the outcome, praising the quality of craftsmanship and the way the pergola has enriched both the usability and visual appeal of the garden. Beyond its immediate impact, the structure is designed for longevity; as the green oak gracefully weathers to a silvery hue, it will continue to mature in character, becoming a timeless and enduring feature within the landscape.
