Look closely at a traditional oak frame and you will often see the ends of oak pegs projecting slightly from its beams and posts. They are an instantly recognisable part of oak-frame construction, but they are not included simply for decoration.

The amount of offset must be carefully controlled. Too little may provide limited drawing action, while too much could place unnecessary stress on the tenon or peg. Accurate design and manufacturing are therefore essential.
Oak pegs can be both structural and visually attractive, but their primary role is functional.
